Regents Monastery
Situated above a canal in a public park, the proposed building balances the secluded, hidden aspects of monastic life with the more inviting community spaces of the religious complex.
Composed on the play between long, continuous surfaces and the interruptions created by inhabitable volumes, the resulting massing allows for a design that mirrors the theme of a private/public divide through material weight and visibility. Lacking a clear boundary, the building both merges-with, and emerges-out-of the surrounding slopes and trees.
A public canal walkway moves through the building, allowing glimpses of the monastic life inside without interrupting it.
