Napa Valley Concept Study

A series of early, preliminary concept studies for a residential house in Napa Valley, US. Included in the proposal were three different approaches to balancing openness and privacy

The client’s site is situated on a slope, overlooking the valley below. The main concern was taking advantage of the natural setting, while simultaneously not allow the nearby buildings and programs interfering with the private space.

1.
The first concepts treats the house as a series of solid, interlocking forms, allowing for a closed off, internal environment.

2.
The second concept proposes an open plan with a focus on horizontal planes with glass walls, accentuating the views.
3.
The third concept combines the previous two; setting private spaces within solid extrusions that then merge with a planar language to host the more shared spaces.
